SHUT UP! IT’S AS CUT & DRY AS BLACK & WHITE!
By Rob Johnston, unofficial member of the (unofficial) silent majority
(Roanoke, VA)
Enough is enough, shut up already! Ray Rhodes and his staff did not get fired because he was black. He got fired for exactly the reason that Ron Wolf has already stated: "…it’s about winning and it’s about losing…"
Those were the reasons Ron Wolf gave for dismissing Ray Rhodes, and those are also the exact same reasons for which Ray Rhodes was dismissed.
For all the pundits and idiots out there, I offer two words: Richie Petibon.
Richie who? Yes, Richie Petibon who is also remembered as the founder of a good barbecue restaurant (outside the D.C. area) and, oh yeah, he was a former head coach for the Washington Redskins. Richie Petibon is white. Richie Petibon was fired after one season as head coach in which his team won 4 games and lost 12 games.
"It’s about winning and it’s about losing…"
Richie Petibon was not coaching a team for the first time that he had not been ociated with the previous year. (Ray Rhodes had not been a part of the Green Bay Packers ociation – before this year – in the last 4 years, as he’d been rather busy as head coach at Philadelphia.) Petibon had been a long time servant as a league-wide-respected defensive coordinator of the Redskins organization (back when the Redskins had good defenses). He took over as head coach when Joe Gibbs stepped down. He won his first game and it was against Dallas. That feat alone should have ured him of at least a second year, right?
"It’s about winning and it’s about losing…"
From the standpoint of an armchair quarterback with a beer gut and day and no football experience beyond the Gray Y (YMCA) years, and NOT from the standpoint of an idiotic pundit or an ex-black player, I was just as surprised as anyone that Rhodes was fired. I think he deserved a longer opportunity. I hope he finds work somewhere in the league because he is one of the better of the good guys. The NFL needs Ray Rhodes…
But not because he’s black.
"It’s about winning and it’s about losing…"
Since we’re gonna talk about Ray Rhodes, let’s judge him in the manner in which most employees are (or should be) judged in their working environment. First of all, the Packers spent their draft on defensive backs. Then they pull LeRoy Butler away from his pro bowl strength – run support and hard-hitting tackling – and pull him back to cover for young new-corners. Everybody ped against the Packers in ’98. Seeing newer, younger faces line up would lead any quarterback to throw even more in ’99. Seeing LeRoy in p coverage would lead any running back to beg for more carries. Make sense? Who’s responsible for the defense? Emmitt Thomas. Who’s responsible for Emmitt Thomas? Ray Rhodes. Who’s responsible for Ray Rhodes? Ron Wolf.
"It’s about winning and it’s about losing…"
