The Liberals
1992 And it was at that very moment we had discovered that we had, indeed, conquered the world. Without affair or any other such celebration, we began to build. Slowly at first. Then, our bravery seemed to grow with our power. It was then we discovered our mistake. The rage that was our youthful exuberance was over. This was a time to heal and teach the vanquished our valued and worshipped lessons in humanity. Cold as they were with all their beliefs in the rebel Jesus. We would all be as one. Surely, they would understand and listen. But not necessarily in that order. We had learned nothing from our greatest teacher. As if to be without feeling for the less fortunate. Certainly to leave them was to condemn them. And the outcast. What was to become of them? Surely they too would benefit from our grand scheme. Time. It was always a matter of time. But how long would they wait? The ships bearing their dreams were so very far off.
We learned hard. Oh how we learned. We were as fools to believe it could have been this simple. So many. From everywhere they came. Only for themselves did anything matter. They carried the weight of many more like themselves. To them, no one else mattered. Not even the ones who had pledged to help them. They had forgotten as we had. All that we are relies on the rest. This did not interest them. How were we to tell them it was no longer important? It was they who helped place us here. Placation was our task. The truth was simply too contrary and complicated. They could never understand it. A new misdirection was necessary for our very survival. We thought it harmless and for the good of the whole. Thus began the campaign for America. Like any other advertising campaign, lives were lost and soles were sold. Anything was better than the truth.
And so, we rode our strategy (lie) as skillfully as a cowboy on a freshly broken mustang. As if in cahoots with our plan, the media at large served us well. This was only natural as the populace will always read and listen to what they want to hear rather than the truth. We could do no wrong. So we set out, not to change the system to what was our vision, but simply let the status quo continue. All this while our faithful media machine did all the work for us. Even when we did wrong, we didn’t. Taking credit for the groundwork laid over the last 12 years was another bonus.
Foolish were we to think our lives were sacred. We began to enjoy the advantages of our station. This would prove to be our downfall. We were children in a toy store caring only of ourselves and casting aside the decorum our office had afforded us.
